Barriers to innovation in life safety

While innovative technology can deliver improvements in life safety, its adoption faces a diverse range of hurdles. The nature of these hurdles, and pathways to overcome them, are explored through case studies (and a few anecdotes) of selected fire safety innovations over the last 30 years.

Mark Burgess

Director, KBR Research

Dr Mark Burgess is an experienced fire safety and building technologies specialist with a career spanning industry, research, and regulation. His industry background focussed on the development, manufacture, and application of advanced fire detection and protection technologies across global markets.
Mark has worked extensively with industry, regulators, and standard setting bodies to improve fire safety outcomes, product performance, and certification frameworks. He held roles at CSIRO, guiding evaluation and technical services supporting safer buildings and infrastructure. As a director at NATA and JASANZ, Mark’s current focus is on certification, accreditation, and the regulatory frameworks that underpin public confidence.
