SESSIONS

Safely Managing Fires Involving Solar and Static Battery Systems

PV/ESS fire safety

Captain Birt will educate on the direct connection between PV/ESS and civilian life safety, firefighter safety, property conservation and incident stabilisation, sharing 20 years of research the US fire service has done on PV connectors, Arc-Fault Protection, Rapid Shutdown and Inverter Failure.

He will discuss the fire risks and response strategies for:

  1. DC-DC Converters Module Level Power Electronics (MLPE) with string voltages of up to 1,500 volts.
  2. Microinverter architecture that includes:
    • One micro per solar module, MLPE
    • Module voltage typically 45 to 65 Vdc
    • AC voltage disconnected by opening a breaker.
  3. The UL 9540A test method for evaluating thermal runaway fire propagation in battery energy storage systems. We will discuss the four levels of testing:
    • Cell level test
    • Module level test
    • Unit level test
    • Installation level test.
PRESENTER(S)
Captain Birt

Capt. Richard Birt

Commissioner (Retired), City of Las Vegas

Captain Birt retired in January 2021 from Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and innovation. His journey is a testament to his unwavering commitment to making a difference.

Renewable Energy Advocate: Captain Birt has been a long-time advocate of renewable energy. He lived with his family in a home powered solely by a solar panel and battery system that he personally designed and installed.

Founder of Solar and Fire Education (S.A.F.E.): Captain Birt established S.A.F.E., an organisation dedicated to providing free training to firefighters worldwide. The mission of S.A.F.E. is to educate firefighters on safely mitigating structure fires involving solar panels and batteries while promoting the resilience of communities through renewable energy.
