Connections matter: Building systems integration

Passive fire protection is designed as the last line of defence yet repeatedly becomes one of the first point of failure in real fires. This presentation applies systems-thinking to understand why persistent gaps in education, competency, inspection and enforcement undermine reliability across design, construction and occupancy.

Nicky Marshall (NZ)

Senior Design Engineer, Protech Design

Nicky is a key member of the Fire Protection Consultant team at Protech Design and has served on the Fire Protection Association NZ Council for the last 7 years and their Board of directors for 3 years.

She has contributed to valuable projects in our industry including driving the Code of Practice for integrated building systems project, and has been/is a committee member for NZS 4510, AS/NZS 1841, AS/NZS 1850 and NZS 4503.

Nicky has worked in the fire protection industry for ~30 years after completing her NZCE mechanical at Christchurch Polytechnic.

She has a broad range of experience including technical support teams, project management and design across various fire protection aspects such as fire equipment, special hazards (gas suppression, water mist etc.) fire alarms, basic fire safety engineering, pumps & water supplies and sprinkler systems.

This experience has equipped her with a unique overview of fire protection aspects not often found in the industry.

As well as serving on the FPANZ council and board, she is currently the chairperson for the Fire Protection Charitable Trust which funds fire standards and training for our industry.
