From Last Line of Defence to First Point of Failure: Understanding and Overcoming the Barriers to Effective Passive Fire Protection

Passive fire protection is designed as the last line of defence yet repeatedly becomes one of the first point of failure in real fires. This presentation applies systems-thinking to understand why persistent gaps in education, competency, inspection and enforcement undermine reliability across design, construction and occupancy.

Dr Gabrielle Peck (NZ)

Technical Director, FCIA & NFCA

  • Dr. Peck obtained her Ph.D. in Fire Chemistry from the UK where her work focused on the design and development of regulatory fire tests for use in the Construction Product Regulations in the EU. Her work has focused on advancing fire testing and guidance for reaction to fire, structural and effective compartmentation passive fire systems, designing and conducting large-scale fire tests globally, and advancing education in the fire industry.
  • Dr. Peck has recently joined the National Fireproofing Contractors Association (NFCA) and Firestop Contractors International Association (FCIA) as technical director- advancing the passive fire protection industry globally through advocacy, education and training.
