Transport for NSW – Fire Life Safety standards

Transport for NSW fire life safety standards are crucial for ensuring the safety of passengers, workers, and infrastructure in various public transportation systems for heavy rail, metro, light rail, road, and maritime assets. The Transport fire life safety series of standards focus on key principles that govern the whole of life application of design, implementation, operation and maintenance along with end of life disposal of assets both in fixed assets and conveyance assets. These standards are built on the principles of:

  • Protecting Lives
  • Minimising Property Damage
  • Ensuring Regulatory Compliance
  • Enhancing Public Confidence
  • Reducing Operational Disruptions
  • Improving Emergency Preparedness
  • Mitigating Environmental Impact

During this presentation, a brief overview will be provided on requirements nominated within the Transport fire life safety suite of standards, how the standards are structured and the interdependencies of these standards with other standards and fire engineering process that are to be used by the engineering design organisations and contractors for delivery of fire safety systems within the Transport for NSW environment.

Jason D’Silva

Senior Engineer, Fire Life Safety, Transport for NSW

Jason has a decade long experience within the fire industry where he has had the unique opportunity to work for a fire contractor, design consultant and now the end client within the regulatory side. This has given Jason a unique perspective on the whole of life approach for fire systems.

In addition, Jason has gained significant experience in the field of fire safety engineering through his master’s course and also fire services design allowing him to be able to systematically evaluate fire engineering solutions and fire services designs in terms of being fit for purpose. This unique combination of experiences has allowed Jason to shape a well-balanced approach towards understanding the challenges faced in delivering projects to client timelines and established budgets.

This has allowed Jason to develop a unique prospective of the challenges faced when trying to anticipate if a design is fit for purpose and if the end clients needs have been met in day to day operational requirement.
