National Bushfire Intelligence Capability (NBIC) – National datasets for understanding Bushfire Hazard Potential at the local scale for current and future climate

NBIC is creating national mapping products for Bushfire Weather extremes, vegetation layers, topographical layers and combining these into bushfire severity extremes layers for current and future climate. This presentation will detail these new mapping layers and provided examples of some of their uses.

Justin Leonard

Research Leader in Bushfire Adaptation, CSIRO

Justin Leonard has dedicated his 30 year research career to the understanding of how bushfire risk to life and infrastructure can be managed. This research combines learnings from bushfire exposure experiments with post bushfire survey investigations and computer modelling of bushfire interactions with buildings. The most recent activities include the development of a national bushfire intelligence capability (NBIC) developing national datasets that are relevant to qualify bushfire hazard and risk at the local scale, accreditations course on bushfire risk assessment with Melbourne University, supporting the Victorian Community Bushfire Community Refuge Pilot Program, development of a risk assessment framework for Victorian Schools, Fire fighter vehicle defence system development and testing, development of a comprehensive life/house loss database for Australia, and assisting various individuals and industry groups develop novel building design solutions and related standards.
