Application of NFPA 855 and Large Scale Fire Testing to Fire Safety Studies for Grid Scale BESS

The rapid deployment of grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to support renewable energy integration introduces complex fire and explosion hazards that challenge traditional safety frameworks. In Australia, a Fire Safety Study (FSS) prepared under HIPAP2 guidelines are a prerequisite for regulatory approval. However, these frameworks often lack provisions for emerging technologies and high-energy chemistries. This presentation will examine the application of NFPA 855:2026, the latest global standard for energy storage systems, and Large-Scale Fire Testing (LSFT) methodologies, including UL9540A and CSA C800 protocols, to enhance the robustness of FSS for grid-scale installations.

Christopher Koch

Senior Fire Engineer, Lote Consulting

MEng (Fire Safety Engineering) & BEng (Chemical Engineering)

Christopher is a Fire Safety and Process Engineer who has recently completed his Masters in Fire Safety Engineering with a focus on modelling the impacts of Lithium-ion Batteries in data centres. He has recent experience working on a vast array of projects involving Dangerous Goods and Lithium-ion Batteries including data centres, grid scale BESS projects, bus depots, residential carparks. This includes assisting international manufacturers with confirming that their fire safety system designs are suitable for use in Australia.

Christopher has a keen interest in emerging risks such as Energy Storage Systems, Data Centre, Solar Plants, Windfarms Lithium-ion Batteries and Hydrogen technology. He is not only involved in the preparation of Performance Solutions but detailed risk assessments focusing on occupant life safety and fire brigade intervention while also considering business continuity.
